October 2008 / New specimens - Malachite/Thasos island

Hi!
We've added a few new malachite specimens from Thasos(see the new arrivals). They are very good examples. This particular spot they come from, produces the finest malachite that can be found in Greece. All of the specimens are crystalline(in 2-3mm needles). These come from our last-year's trip to Thasos!

April 2008 / Serifos island, Greece

I'm the founder of Greekrocks, Christos Spiromitros and I'll tell you my story from my trip to Serifos!
Serifos, is a well-known classic locality known for it's excellent hedenbergite included quartz(Prasem quartz). There is also good Hematite, Andradite and Ilvaite and ofcourse other minerals of less importance. The skarn zones of the island have been searched by thousands of collectors & dealers during the last 20years. As a result, one can now find too many empty pockets!
However, after a lot of searching and much luck, I managed to uncover a pocket with a very strange kind of Prasem, very uncommon for the locality. I called this pocket "the broken-leg pocket" because my leg was injured when I found it. The color, luster, form and transculency of the crystals is very unusual. The geometry of the pocket made it impossible to get all of the specimens out undamaged. However, decent specimens and a few intact ones came out!
